Interviews With Paul Williams

"I think in the beginning drugs and alcohol were a way to deal with this amazing paralyzing fear" "I went to U.C.L.A. got my certificate as a drug and alcohol counselor". These are quotes from Paul Williams in an interview he gave in the magazine STEPS in 1995, about his struggle with alcohol and drugs, and how he used this experience to help others. Paul also talks about the effects of alcohol and drugs on his career in an interview with "The New York Daily News" in July 1998 as well as in interviews in "Treatment Today" and "Nashville Scene" in the summer of 1998.

Other interviews with Paul Williams can also be found in the "Nashville Banner" from April 1995 and in an "AOL" interview also from 1995. On July 3rd Judy 1998 Reboy interviewed Paul Williams for "ANiMATO" magazine.

The Secret Of NIMH

There are an amazing number (391 at a recent count) of Web pages mentioning this 1982 animated film where Paul Williams wrote the lyrics with Jerry Goldsmith supplying the music. (Thanks to Sarah for telling me about some of these pages).

"The Secret Of NIMH" is produced by Jeremy Hodges and was one of the first pages I found contained some audio highlights as well as lots of information about the film.

"FIEVEL'S HOMEPAGE " is produced by Kelvin Goh and contains a large number of pages about the film including links to other NIMH pages as well as a page where you can download the entire NIMH Soundtrack. Ishtar

Paul Williams wrote many of the songs to the 1986 movie 'Ishtar'. Although the movie was not a commercial success, Paul is still proud of his songwriting contribution to the film. A soundtrack album was recorded but never released, and remains in the vaults somewhere.

The Ishtarthemovie.com web site has some great sound clips from the movie as well as interviews with Paul Williams.

Hear Paul Williams Live On the Web

With John Denver - 1973

paul_johndenverMichiel and Dolly Ten Brug have a series of pages dedicated to that great singer/songwriter John Denver. John Denver is a singer who, along with Paul Williams, has had a great influence on me. On their "BBC shows 1973" page they give details of six T.V. shows that John Denver did for the BBC in 1973. (And I'm old enough to remember how great they were!). On show four of this series John had as his guest PAUL WILLIAMS. From that show Michiel and Dolly have included a LIVE AUDIO RECORDING of John and Paul singing a duet of Paul's brother Mentor's song "Drift Away". To hear John's introduction of Paul, along with this unusual version of the song, click here and then left click your mouse on the "Drift Away" link on BBC SHOW 4 - ITEM 10. If you want to download the song, click here and then right click your mouse on the "Drift Away" link on BBC SHOW 4 - ITEM 10, and choose 'Save Target As'. You will then be able to choose where on your hard drive you want to download it to. You may find that it will take some time to load this 'wav' file, but be patient it's worth it.

Also on that show Paul sang "Look What I Found".

You can also see a video of Paul and John Singing 'Drift Away' on YouTube here. It comes after John's 'Magic Act' part of the show.

In January 1999 I sent Paul a copy of the above performance of 'Drift Away', this was what he had to say about it:

"I too was very moved to hear John and I singing my brother Mentors song. I remember going to England to shoot several different television shows including the John Denver Show. It was produced and directed by Stanley Dorfman who created the `In Concert' series for BBC2...The vocals may have been pre-recorded... Maybe not. I honestly don't remember.

To tell you the truth I don't remember specifics of the shoot. Just that John was a charming and generous man. Several years later when I performed at a benefit in Florida I had a scheduling problem that was solved when John sent his Lear Jet to pick me up after my show in Washington State. A long and expensive trip I'm sure but John was like that. His Dad flew and I enjoyed spending some time with him too. God Bless You. Paul."

If anyone has copies of any of these shows I would love to have the opportunity to see them again.

Extracts From "Phantom Of The Paradise" - 1974

winslow_phantom Theseaudio extracts from the film "Phantom Of The Paradise", are part a series of pages (in French) dedicated to the films writer/director Brian De Palma.

Soundtrack From "The Secret Of NIMH" - 1982

"FIEVEL'S HOMEPAGE" is produced by Kelvin Goh and contains a page where you can download the entire NIMH Soundtrack. All tracks are in RealAudio format and therefore far from CD quality. However, the small size of the files would save lots of downloading time. Paul Williams sings on track 7 "Flying Dreams".

Extracts From "Batman" - 1992 - 1998

pehguin_animated_ There are two audio extracts of Paul Williams as the voice of "The Penguin": "The Penguin makes a mistake" and "The Penguin persues Batman".

pehguin_animated_ You can hear Paul Williams, as the Penguin, in a video extract entitled Barbara and Dick attend the Penguins club.

Extract From "Dexter's Laboratory" - 1997

Dexter_album_sleeve Back in 1998 I had an email from Dave Smith who wrote the song "Breathe In The Good Sunshine" which Paul sang on an episode of the cartoon show "Dexter's Laboratory". I have just discovered that you buy the CD of Paul singing the song, and can hear an extract of Paul singing it. I have added this information to my "Meeting With Paul Williams For Dexter's Laboratory" account.
