Paul Williams in 'The Bold and The Beautiful'

Last Updated 23rd June 1998

On 23rd June I received the following email from Suzanne:

"'The Bold and The Beautiful' is a US soap on CBS on during the day....

Academy Award-winning songwriter PAUL WILLIAMS has joined the cast of the 'The Bold and the Beautiful'. He'll portray "Bailey", (a recovering alcoholic), the executive assistant to a wealthy and influential motivational speaker Pierce Peterson (portrayed by PAUL SATTERFIELD). Williams will debut on 7th July 1998, and reports to work Monday, June 8 for wardrobe fittings and rehearsals.

He co-wrote such classic pop tunes as 'We've Only Just Begun', 'Rainy Days and Mondays', 'Just an Old Fashioned Love Song' and 'I Won't Last a Day Without You'.

He received an Oscar for the hit, 'Evergreen', co-written by Barbra Streisand and performed by her in the 1976 remake of 'A Star Is Born'.

Williams has acted before in such motion pictures as 'Phantom of the Paradise', 'Smoky and the Bandit', 'The Doors' and the more recent 'Headless Body in a Topless Bar'.

His numerous television credits include 'Walker', 'Texas Ranger', 'Picket Fences', 'Dream On', 'Boston Common' and 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.'

Why Paul Williams took on the role of Bailey in 'The Bold and The Beautiful'

Last Updated 27th June 1998

Since receiving the above information I went searching for more information about 'The Bold And The Beautiful' as it was not a programme I had heard of here in the UK.

Was I surprised therefore to find a whole 'Bold & Beautiful' world out there. One of the most informative was 'Joni's - The Bold And The Beautiful Page'. The following information about Paul Williams is taken from her B & B News page.

Songwriter/Actor Paul Williams had a very special reason to join B&B as Bailey, personal assistant to motivational speaker Pierce Peterson (Paul Satterfield).

Like his character, he is also a recovering alcoholic, he's been in recovery for eight years. Williams tells SON.."That's why I wanted to do the part," "I'm on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Alcoholism, so a huge part of my life is about recovery.Worldwide, 350 million people watch B&B, so this is an amazing podium."

Williams, whose songs include the classic "We've Only Just Begun", now has a new tune on the charts, "You're Gone", recorded by Diamond Reo. "In the last eight years, I've felt like the new kid in town, it's like having a second career. I already had the copyrights to my music, a star on Hollywood Boulevard and I'd won the Grammy. But it's like somebody else did it. I feel like I've been reborn."

Paul Williams tells SOW that he lives in an old haunted house, up in the Sunset Hills above the Sunset Strip, that is laden with Hollywood history. The place was built by Sidney Toler, one of the actors who played Charlie Chan in the movies. Orson Welles lived there as did Ida Lupino when she was married to Howard Duff. However, it's former inhabitant Peter Lorre whose spirit still lingers above the place.Paul goes on to say that he felt him walking around there a lot and eerie things have happened with no explanation...

(Thanks to Joni for the above information - may be I'll get to see 'The Bold and The Beautiful' one day!)

Paul Williams character, Bailey, is to become the villain in 'The Bold and The Beautiful'

Last Updated 4th September 1998

On 4th September 1998 I received the following email from Kel (who had previously sent me a report on seeing "Paul Williams in Honolulu in 1971"):

Hi David!

This article is from next week's T.V. Guide, I thought you might like to have it.

The Last Of Sheila
By Michael Logan

Soap superstar Kimberlin Brown has been fired from The Bold and the Beautiful. Surprising? Yes and no. Brown is a wildly popular, consummate actress, and her character, Sheila Warwick, may be the best baddie in the history of daytime drama.

But after nearly a decade of outrageous yet always forgiveable crime (three years on The Young and the Restless, six on B&B), Sheila finally crossed over the line last month:

She threatened to murder the infant grandson of her love rival Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery). "I was well aware I was writing Sheila into a corner," says B&B executive producer/head writer Bradley Bell, who admits he has grown weary of finding fresh ways to sustain the character's reign of terror and is eager to move in new directions. "Kimberlin's last air date is October 1st.

There will be a deadly showdown between Sheila and Stephanie, a great series of episodes with a little surprise at the end". Doesn't this leave B&B without a villain? "Not really," says Bell. "Another will slowly emerge - and that's Bailey". Played by the terrific Paul Williams (yes, the Oscar-winning tunesmith!). Bailey is a fawning man Friday who is just a little too interested in the sex life of his boss, therapist Pierce Peterson (Paul Satterfield). "I didn't bring him in to be a villain but that's the way it's turning out. He'll be getting darker and darker every day".

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL
The Write Stuff

Paul Williams (Bailey) freely admits a certain parallel that he and his soap character share - both are recovering alcoholics. "I'm eight years sober", reveals Williams. "I'm also on the boars of directors for the National Council of Alcoholism. A huge part of my life is about recovering".

An accomplished and award-winning songwriter, Williams is responsible for such mega-hits as 'You And Me Against The World', 'Rainy Days and Mondays' and 'Evergreen', but he ultimately backed away from his profesion when he sought sobriety.

When the drinking was in check, Williams decided to return to his role as tunesmith via one of America's famous music capitals. Would that be New York? Detroit? Nope-Nashville. Surprisingly Williams considers country-western a logical progression for his kind of composing. "It's become America's pop", Williams enthuses. "My lyrics have always been very simple and non edgy. 'Love soft as an easy chair' is not exactly urban"

Ending Of Paul Williams Contract With 'The Bold And The Beautiful'

Last Updated 5th October 1998

I found the following information on 'Scott Novick - The Bold And The Beautiful Page'

According to TV GUIDE ONLINE, Paul Williams (Bailey) has been bumped to recurring status. "Paul brought a level of complexity to Bailey that made the character so intriguing to watch," executive producer/head writer Bradley Bell said in a statement.

"He was a great addition to the cast, but due to storyline purposes he's been taken off contract." According to SOAP OPERA WEEKLY, the actor's last airdate on the show is Oct 21. "He was a great addition to the cast, but due to storyline purposes he's been taken off contract."

Paul said, on 4th October 1998, "Yes, I have left B&B for now. They may write additional stories that include`Bailey' but I don't know when. I appreciate everyones enthusiasm for my work on the show and all the hard work supporting my music and all aspects of my career."

If anyone would like to express their disagreement with Paul being axed from 'The Bold and The Beautiful' see below.

Thanks to Scott and Sarah for the above information.

Further News Of Paul Williams Exit From 'The Bold And The Beautiful'

Last Updated 11th October 1998

I found the following information, by Meg McCaffrey, on the 'Comings and Goings' page of 'Soap Opera Digest' dated 6th October 1998

Actor/Composer/Songwriter PAUL WILLIAMS, who plays Bailey, one of The Bold and The Beautiful's most curious characters, is headed off the soap in late October. ""I think so for a while anyway," Williams tells Digest Online of his departure, which is storyline-dictated.

"He was a great addition to the cast, but due to storyline purposes he's been taken off contract."

According to SOAP OPERA WEEKLY, the actor's last airdate on the show is Oct 21.

"The storyline, without giving away too much, has essentially rolled to an end," the Oscar and Grammy winner elaborates. "At this point, it's up to [Executive Producer] Bradley Bell whether my character will return."

For Williams, who joined the B&B cast in July 1998, the writing out of Bailey, Pierce's devotee, comes as a big disappointment. "I was very surprised, because there had been a lot of talk about my being the new villain on the show," Williams shares. (see above)

"I don't know if it's a matter of fan response or what, but I think that the last few shows are some of the best work I've every done on camera," adds the actor, whose credits include the Oliver Stone film, The Doors. "No matter what, I'm really proud of the work I did there."

So would Williams like TPTB to resurrect his character down the road? "It's something I love doing so I hope they bring Bailey back," he answers. "It's strange but I never thought I would enjoy doing a soap. It was the best experience... My hope is that they will bring Bailey back. If they don't, then they don't."

Meanwhile, the man who co-wrote the Oscar-winning Barbra Streisand song, 'Evergreen', and penned The Muppet Movie score, has his hands full outside of daytime. "I'm off to Nashville for a couple of weeks," says Williams, whose latest hit is the top 5 song "You're Gone" performed by country supergroup Diamond Rio.

He plans to write more songs with his songwriting partner on that song, Jon Vesner, as well as with Gene Nelson, who wrote the hit, "18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses." Williams' biggest hits include "Rainy Days And Mondays", "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "We've Only Just Begun", "You And Me Against The World", 'I Won't Last a Day Without You'.

"I have a batch of speaking engagements I have to do this fall," (see here) continues Williams, who is a licensed drug rehabilitation counselor; one of the reasons he was attracted to playing Bailey is because, like him, the character is a recovering alcoholic. "But I know I'd go back in a heartbeat and I told Bradley that.. They're just the best people over there."

[Williams also shares that he's included in an upcoming book entitled, Lives Charmed, by Linda Sivertsen (Health Communications Inc.). "It's basically intimate conversations with extraordinary people, people who have used their success for humanitarian or philanthropic causes."]

Check out the excellent Digest Online exclusive Q&A with Williams by clicking here. (Thanks to Sarah  for telling me about this Q&A interview).
