Back in 1997 the National Youth Music Theatre's Bugsy Malone, finally made it to the West-End after an Edinburgh Festival run, a UK Tour and a London Fringe run at the Lyric, Hammersmith. It marked the first ever West-End show with an all-youth cast (even the 1970's version featured adult singers).

It was on at The Queens Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, W1 for a limited season from 15th November-January 10th with a weeks extenuation until January 17th 1998

It starred Michael Sturges & Bobby Bethell as Bugsy, Leanne Connolly & Elizabeth Avis as Blousey Brown, Stuart Piper & Mark Boyle as Dandy Dan, Sheridan Smith as Talullah & Paul Lowe as Fat-Sam.

It was directed by Jeremy James Taylor and Russell Labey with choreography by Kay Shepard. Musical direction was by John Pearson, design by Gary Underwood, lighting design by Richard House and sound by Thomas Ashbee.

The show was produced by Edward Snape and sponsored by the Young Telegraph & Capital FM

One of the most interesting things about the stage show is that it contains material not originally in the movie, most notably the numbers That's Why They Call Me Dandy (Java 'PopUp Lyrics' here) and "Show Business" (Java 'PopUp Lyrics' here). I'll let Stuart Piper, who played Dandy Dan in the stage show, explain:

"My name is Stuart Piper, and I played Dandy Dan in the 1997/8 West End production of Bugsy Malone, which played at the Queens' Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. It was the first ever West-End production with an all-youth cast (as the previous Bugsy version had been with booth singers), and we released a cast album. He (Paul Williams) also gave us material that he wrote earlier, but which was never used for the film, and I was lucky enough to be the first person to have performed That's Why They Call Me Dandy (Java 'PopUp Lyrics' here) - on stage, and on CD."

(Amazon has this on sale here along with some sound bits including "That's Why They Call Me Dandy")
