Paul opened it at 21:20 with "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song" and in after little while there was no "need to bring it back, cause it was never really gone". I'm talking about the magic and the spirit that Paul print in the people who were always looking for his music.

The Newspaper Reviews

November 2000

With a repertoire that is the envy of any songwriter  - he certainly included some songs of the Phantom of the Paradise - he made two foreseeable but emotive concerts, full with nostalgia and very good melodies.

SOME MORE REFLECTIONS

This is a picture of Analia Moreda with Paul on 7 November 2000. As well as attending one of the 2000 Argentinean concerts she also attended Paul's concert back in 1980.

HARDLY ARRIVED AT ARGENTINA, CLARIN INTERVIEWED PAUL WILLIAMS

Paul Williams recounted to Clarín his passage from drugs and alcohol.

Paul Williams returned to Argentina after 20 years. Tonight he will be performing in Mar del Plata and Tuesday and Wednesday in the Coliseo of Buenos Aires.

Time passes and Williams is older, but happy. With 60 full and colourful years to his name, this famous composer of songs that exploded in the 70's, and have since become claccics, has returned. In all senses. He is now free from the drugs and the alcohol, that badly affected him at the height of his career.

Even though economic circumstances would allow him and his family not to work, Paul knows what he likes. Like returning to Argentina because he likes both making connections and he holds a warm memory of the wave of local public support from his tour of 1980.

He arrives from Los Angeles, a limousine takes him to airport Jorge Newbery to take a plane to Mar del Plata.

It is a long pull from home, but I am contented. To perform with my band of musical friends is like walking in old shoes. Before I became sober, without drugs or alcohol, I was not certain I could continue making music. It was as if the passion had gone away.

How it is that the passion went away?
When I left the alcohol and drugs behind it was as if an important part of my life had disappeared. I had a very unbalanced life. Alcoholism is a very serious disease.
I concentrated on learning to live without addictions, and to being part of the community. I have an economic position that allows me to help every day in a hospital, and never have I felt more useful in my life than today. One of the reasons that I must act is indeed to speak of these subjects. It is not a crusade, but an opportunity. Because people say to me: Hey, Paul Williams, you disappeared . I say yes, I disappeared in the alcohol and drugs. That is my present message: you can leave all that shit behind.

It is then that Paul Williams asks how is it here, and how it affects certain stars of pop & rock.

In my case, music and addictions were part of the same unbalanced life. I lived completely isolated, alone. But now I am doing songs and connecting, and it's far better than before. I am one more voice in my band, and enjoy the process of creating songs with somebody. Also my relationship with my children, a son of 19 and a daughter of 16, is completely different.

Are you happy...
Yes, I was practicing with the band and I returned to feeling that everything is easier now. I do not have expectations nor as much pressure. Of course, I
want people to come and the production to go well. But what matters to me most is the music.

And the fame?
Well, it is not the favorite part of my life. The love of people is wonderful. For example my songs have animated millions of marriage celebrations. But twenty years ago it was terrible. The fame was transformed into a drug, and instead of writing songs, I showed off. In
addition, when I was at the top of my career and they saw me high, it appeared that I was well, and the drugs made things seem that way.

Are you interested in Politics?
Yes, I am democratic and I will vote for Al Gore. For example, because I am in favor of the social programs and of the freedom for women to choose abortion, and Bush isn't.

ARGENTINA 2000

A VIEW FROM THE STAGE

Last Updated 23rd November 2000

Hi David,
I'm Lothar Struff, Paul's Bass player and I just happened to read your report on the Argentina trip. From my perspective it was wonderful. The audiences in Buenos Aires and Mar Del Plata were so appreciative that I got choked up on stage.

Here are a few notes:
- The new songs that we performed were;
"You're Gone" (Java 'PopUp Lyrics' here)
"This Is Making Love"
"The Way We Say Goodbye"
"Anything Less (Than You)"
(We actually put the background harmonies to these new songs, including "This Is Making Love", together in the hotel room in Mar Del Plata on the day of the first show)
"Someday Man" which was recorded by The Monkees
"Love Dance" - a song written with Ivan Linz (sp) from Brazil (This song was also recorded by George Benson on his 'Give Me The Night' album)

(For full track listing for the show on 7 November 2000 go here)

- We had no idea that Waking Up Alone (Java 'PopUp Lyrics' here) was a single in Argentina but learned it before the second show because of the many requests.

John Lee Sanders, Chris Caswell and Bob Terry working our some last minute changes in my hotel room

- This was the first time in about eight years that this band has worked with Paul and I think I can speak for all of us when I say that it was and has always been a labor of love.

- By the way, here is the band line up;
Chris Caswell-keyboards/conductor

Chris at the piano at a TV station in Buenos Aires
(Chris has a new company called Anote4you.com that offers customized musical greetings for every occasion. They have just set up a web page here)

Rick Alegria-drums

Rick on this tour
John Lee Sanders-keyboards/alto sax/background vocals

John Lee Sanders at the rehearsal in Buenos Aires
(John has his own web page here. He has also made some comments of his own about the tour with Paul Williams on his news page here. Some time ago John also sent me some reflections on working with Paul in the past. These can be seen here.)

Robert Terry-guitar/background vocals

Bob on this tour

Lothar Struff-bass/background vocals

Lothar on this tour
(Lothar has his own web page, here, about his career and the songwriting work he has done with Robert Terry)

Bob, Chris, and I were also along for the Montevideo tour that you mentioned on your site (See here). At that time Bob and I were just singing background vocals.

Great job on the website!

Peace,
Lothar Struff

PAUL WILLIAMS IN ARGENTINA

TEATRO COLISEO CONCERT

 NOVEMBER 7, 2000

Last Updated 8th November 2000

The following
a report, kindly sent to me by Anita, of her experiences of  seeing Paul Williams live in concert and meeting him afterwards.

Hi Dave!!!

I´m Anita From Argentina. I´ve just found your web page, and I think it´s amazing.

Amazing, as the concert, Paul gave yesterday!!!! It was GREAT!!!!!
I´m 26 years old, and I´ve never thought that I would see him playing live.

I´ve got 5 sisters and a brother much older than me, so when I was a little girl they used to play Paul´s records. I grew up listening his songs.

Yesterday I have the best of times. The show lasted 2 hours an a half aprox. and he played ALL of my favorite songs. Evergreen, Rainbow Connection, The Hell Of It, Just An Old Fashioned Love Song, You and Me Against The World, Nice To Be Around, We´ve Only Just Began, Loneliness, Inspiration, That´s Enough For Me, Won´t Last A Day Without You, Bugsy Malone´s theme.. he played some new songs, that I didn´t know, and he even sang "The Love Boat"(after singing it, he said, that you must have guts to sing that song in front of an audience... :O)).

When he and the band (By the way THE BAND WAS FAB!!!!!!) made the final bow, all the Theatre stood up and start clapping, and singing, (ole, ole, ole, ole, ole.... Paul... Paul....) and we didn´t leave, we wanted more... the lights went out again, and the was Paul and the band with more songs!!! My boyfriend, Pablo, and I shouted out loud that we wanted "Waking Up Alone" and HE PLAYED IT!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!! What a Night!!!!!

When the show was over, Pablo and I get to know him, and he was really warm and friendly. We thanked him for singing "Waking Up Alone" and told him that we were celebrating our engagement, so Paul congratulated us and signed up our CD!
Unfortunately we didn´t take a picture with him but I´m sending you the autograph and ticket.

IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES!!!!!! Everyone was smiling and enjoying the great time Paul and his band made us live!!!!

Well, Dave, hope you like my comment about the show.

See you!!!

Anita

P.S He also sang "It´s All Been Said Before", "This Is Making Love", a song he wrote for the Monkeys in 1968 (Someday Man), and 2 new songs that I can´t remember their names.

Best Regards.

Anita

Thanks Anita for a great report...and a very happy Anniversary to you and Pablo. Thanks also for the concert photos below

I thought that everyone might be interested in the lyrics to the beautiful song 'This Is Making Love':

This Is Making Love

(Lyrics & Music Paul Williams/Jim Photoglo)

There have been times in my life
When I thought I'd found the one
The missing part
Matching heart
to mine
But I never felt this much
The power of your touch
A feeling I'm just learning to define

This is making love
This is something higher
A perfect blending of
Devotion and desire
I thought heaven was above
'Til I found it in your kiss
This is making love

There is a sound to your voice
That holds me like a child
Face to face
The safest place to stay
And when I hold you near
I know you always hear
The truth behind the words I try to say

This is making love
This is something higher
A perfect blending of
Devotion and desire
I thought heaven was above
'Til I found it in your kiss
This is making love

I thought heaven was above
'Til I found it in your kiss
This is making love ...
This is making love

More reports will appear as I get them.

See you

David

PAUL WILLIAMS IN BUENOS AIRES 2000

TEATRO COLISEO CONCERT

 NOVEMBER 7, 2000

Last Updated 23rd November 2000

Hi David.
My English is not very good, but I´ll try to write some comments about Paul´s concerts in Buenos Aires.

I went on Tuesday to the first 2K show of Paul Williams in Buenos Aires. It was great I felt very happy seeing Paul feeling good. I went to a Paul´s show 20 or 23 years ago. He is like the good wine, when is older, is better.

I bought my first P.W. album in 1975 or 1976. To tell the truth, I bought on a Monday "The Best Of P.W.", on Tuesday "Phantom" and on Thursday "Ordinary Fool". I was only 12 years old, but I get very surprised and charmed with Paul´s music & lyrics.

In 1979 (I am not sure , perhaps 77, 78) P.W. visited Argentina for the 1st. time and he performed at the "Gran Rex" theatre. I went to the show, it was the first "rock" show in my life. I enjoyed the show a lot. My wife went to the same show... but I knew her 10 years later.

Some years ago, I´ve bought the same albums, but in CD format. I lost all connection with Paul's "new" music. I didn´t know about his problem with alcohol & drugs. I thought that he was retired or simply making no-commercial music.

I had a good surprise last Monday when I saw a poster in the street announcing "Paul Williams in Buenos Aires". I bought 2 tickets, one for my wife, the other for me. Finally we went together to a Paul´s concert. It was a great show, my God, how can a man write so many wonderful songs !!!! (and perform them with that deep feeling)

In the 1979 show, Paul seems to be in first place, a star; in second an artist; and in third a man. In 2000 I found a great artist and a good man. He doesn´t need to act like a star now, cause he has the simplicity of the greats.

I don't know when will Paul perform again in Buenos Aires. I am sure I will be there.
Good luck for all
Javier
(Thanks Javier for your account. I love your phrase "He doesn´t need to act like a star now, cause he has the simplicity of the greats." From my exeriences of Paul this is so true)

THE GREATEST NIGHT OF ALL

TEATRO COLISEO CONCERT

 NOVEMBER 8, 2000

Last Updated 23rd November 2000

Now it´s 10:30 AM, November the 9th. I´m in the office and I really can´t explain all my feelings and emotions....

Yesterday night I went to the concert. What can I tell you guys ....

IT WAS GREAT !!!!!!!

The show started at about 21:30 and it was about 2 hours of good music and a lot of tears !!!

Now let me tell you my personal experience with Paul.

The last two songs of the show were with all the audience going crazy, nobody was in their seats, everybody was very close to the stage, shaking hands with Paul and asking for more music. I was there too, with my record sleeve in my hands showing Paul my little treasure. He took a look at me
and thank me from the distance....
Then the lights went down and the show was over.... I thought, ok, that´s all boy, go home.

But then I remembered Analia´s advise about where to go to maybe meet Paul. I went to the door from the right. Suddenly a bunch of people came in. They were from the Sheraton Hotel, and had some special access to the back stage. Since I was one of the only guys there, I joined the group. I was maybe two meters away from Paul, when I took my camera and said to one of the VIP´s, "I have 3 pics in this film. One is for me and Paul, the other one is for Paul and my record and the third one is for you, OK ??" The guy said "YES !!!!"

I went to Paul and to my surprise, he said "You were in front of the stage, with this record !!!!", Then we started a nice conversation for about 10 minutes. I said "Hello" from you David and also from you Analia !!! He was amazed !!! He thanked me for all the support and we shake hands and a couple of strong hugs !!!!

Then he signed my "A Little On the Windy Side" sleeve, WITH A SPANISH DEDICATION ON IT !!!! He told me he had some songs from this album ready to be performed live, but there was no time for any other songs on stage. I asked for my favourite one "Another Fine Mess", and guess what....... HE STARTED SINGING IT IN FRONT OF ME !!!!!! That was the coolest experience I ever had in music.

I told him that since tomorrow (November 10th) is my birthday, this was the best gift I could receive. And then he took my record again and wrote (10/11/2000, HAPPY BIRTHDAY).

That was too much for one night, so we took one picture together and I thanked him again for all his music and poetry and the good moments I lived because of his work. Not to mention his laughs when I confessed all the women I kissed listening my favourite record.

Then the other person came in, and since we had this deal, I took them the last picture. Paul said, "You gonna be my photographer !!!", and I said "don´t worry about me, all this stuff is going to be on the web site !!!!", he thanked and hugged me one more time.

Another person came to me and asked for one more shot. The film wasn´t rewound so I tried one more time. Since I was still in the backstage (as a photographer), I took my "Back to Love Again" sleeve and I asked Paul one more sign. He said "This is an expensive one !!!", and I said it´s worth every dollar I payed. Guess what ??? He hugged me one more time and wrote some dedication on it.

Before leaving the backstage, I took the ticket and he also signed it. I thanked him for the 10 minutes of glory I had because of him, and he thanked me for all the support. He told me, he will be here next year !!! So I´m sharing some very good news with you guys !!! He told me there was too much music he would like to sing and he didn´t know what to do about it. I just said, JUST KEEP SINGING MAN !!!!! and one final hug and a see you soon ended my personal experience.

After leaving the backstage, I shook hands with John Lee Sanders (Keyboards, backing vocals and sax), he told me I was too young for this music and we laughed for a while. He gave me his own CD "It´s All Blues To Me" and asked me to write some comments about it....

That´s it, end of a wonderful night. I just want it to share it with you guys !!!.

From Buenos Aires, Argentina, Love & Friendship !!!

Ale.-

PS

November 9th, 18:30 (The day after) ......

I was leaving the office, going home, with one of my buddies, when I met a group of tourist on the streets...

And guess what ......

There was Mr. Paul Williams and the rest of the band having fun in downtown !!!! They were shopping, just a couple of hours before the plane was taking them home.

I said hello to him and asked "remember me ???", he was looking at me with a face like "I know you from somewhere..."

Then, Mr. Sanders (Keyboards), said "You are Alejandro !!!!", and we started talking for a couple of minutes with all of them. I mentioned that I was in contact with you and that my first impressions were through the net. Then Paul said "YES !!! You´re the guy who is in contact with David". "Ahhhh, The Internet !!!! " .

I said "goodbye and have a nice way back home" to all of them, shook hands and I left to the subway.

That´s it, the cherry in the ice cream !!!!!

Now I´m celebrating my birthday (November 10th) , but I received the biggest present just 2 days ago (you know what I mean).

Take care guys !!!

Ale.-

(Thanks Ale for your wonderful account of your meeting with Paul, and some great pictures to go with it. A real experience to treasure)

BUENOS AIRES - ARGENTINA

Last Updated 28th November 2000

20th October 2000

Dear Dave,

First of all, I am Miriam, from Buenos Aires Argentina. And let me tell you that I am deeply surprised to find such a beautiful page of Paul.
20 years ago, in 1980 I went to see Paul in the Grand Rex Theater, it was as Analia says: wonderful, unforgettable.

Paul decorated all my years of teenager with his music, his in my heart and my memories. I remember him trying to speak Spanish, where he told that he was going to sing all songs of love written by "el chiquitito".
Well, now I tell you that I was extremely surprised when I heard he was coming to Argentina. So I run for my ticket. After the show I will mail you again, in order to tell you the details of it.
Regards, Miriam

9th November 2000

Last night I went to see Paul's show in Argentina, so I'm writing you with the magic still inside me. I was early in the evening so I got into a literature bar next door to the theater. After some minutes 2 boys came in and began to play "Evergreen" in the piano. When he finished, we all enthusiastically asked if there was more Paul for us, then we realize that we all were waiting there for the show.

Paul opened it at 21:20 with "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song" and in after little while there was no "need to bring it back, cause it was never really gone". I'm talking about the magic and the spirit that Paul print in the people who were always looking for his music.

The show was an informal one, Chris Caswell was the pianist, the same that in 1980!! And on the saxo was John Sanders, sorry I can't remember the others, but someone will.

Paul commented that often the public forget very soon their idols, but here in Argentina he couldn't believe how we kept him in our heart from 20 long years, without knowing anything about him. He told that the 3 days he spent in Argentina were a gift for him.
Then he asked if any of us was in the theater in 1981. A lot of us shake our hands with pride.
I got deeply emotional to see him so entire and reasonable, talking us against alcohol and drugs, I will remember this for ever.
After 1 ½ hrs of show we made a kind of Piano Bar, where he asked "which do you want?". He always interacted a lot with the people and his Spanish is wonderful, telling stories of his life among his songs that we enjoy so much.

At last he shake hands with us and greeted all of us warmly. David, what more can I tell you, I could never imagine I would spent a time like this with him. It was just wonderfull!!!
Regards, Miriam
(Thanks Miriam for sharing your memories of what sounded like a memories of a wonderful experience)

THE NEWSPAPER REVIEWS

Last Updated 13th December 2000

The following are reviews of Paul's shows from Argentinian Newspapers.

FROM "LA RAZON"

7th November 2000

WILLIAMS, A TRIUMPHAL RETURN

Yesterday in Mar del Plata. Today in Buenos Aires. With marvellous humbleness and 60 years over his back, Paul Williams performed in Mar del Plata yesterday. He is a  little giant of international music and is celebrating eleven years of being free from addictions. Today and tomorrow, at the Coliseo Theatre, he'll complete his Argentina tour. The ovation was so big yesterday that he had to come back to stage twice, at the only concert he gave at La Subasta Theatre, where he made those old songs and introduced some others recently created. Then he sang the Phantom of the Paradise movie leitmotiv, perhaps his most recalled classic song, and he added We've only just begun, Rainy days and Mondays, among others.

But his banner is to have recovered from his addictions. "At age 49 I had to learn how to live. Now I've been sober for a long time and I can say I'll celebrate my 11th birthday, because I came back to life", he said, in amazing sincerity.

NOSTALGIA

Paul Williams  made a list of songs that are part of everybody's memories.

**** Time seems not to go by for Paul Williams. His huge list of ballads, many of them become popular through the movies whose soundtracks they belonged to, are still listened to as fresh and intemporal as when they were written and firstly performed.

Carrying 60 years over his little humanity, he has gone through the madness of drugs and alcohol and he tells it to the four winds, and he celebrates with the audience that recovery he is dating eleven years ago.

With sometimes lack of vocal precision, with a repertoire that is the envy of any songwriter  - he certainly included some songs of the Phantom of the Paradise - he made two foreseeable but emotive concerts, full with nostalgia and very good melodies.
